Subject: RE: FOI 2026-024 / 032 / 036 — c.1880 medieval ironwork from Great House Farm, Llandough: published sources say it is in the National Museum From: FOI Requests Direction: received Date: Tue, 20 Oct 2026 07:14 UTC Institution: Amgueddfa Cymru - Museum Wales Refs: FOI 2026-024, FOI 2026-032, FOI 2026-036 Archive id: gm-1a158298d6ff819a ------------------------------------------------------------ Mr Buckler Before we can consider point 2 of your request, we would be grateful for clarification. The searches undertaken in relation to FOI 2026-024, FOI 2026-032 and FOI 2026-036 were directed at specific records, locations and objects associated with the matters raised in those requests. Point 2 of your current request seeks searches for "medieval ironwork (any object type)" using a number of place names, provenance references and donor details. As drafted, this would significantly broaden the scope of the searches previously undertaken and could encompass a substantial number of collection records. As you will be aware, there are a number of properties named "Great House Farm" across Wales and "Llandough" is not a unique place name. In addition, Amgueddfa Cymru holds a substantial collection of medieval ironwork and it is not clear whether you are seeking records relating specifically to the alleged discovery at Great House Farm/Tŷ Mawr, Llandough (near Penarth/Cardiff), or a broader category of collection records matching the search terms listed in your email. To assist us in identifying the information you are seeking, please clarify: * whether you are seeking records relating specifically to the alleged c.1880 discovery at Great House Farm, Llandough (near Penarth/Cardiff); or * whether you are seeking all records of medieval ironwork matching any of the search terms listed in your email, regardless of whether they have any recorded connection to the alleged discovery. Once we have received your clarification, we will be able to consider the request further. Please note that the request will be placed on hold pending receipt of your clarification. Dear Amgueddfa Cymru FOI team, Re: FOI 2026-024 (25 August 2026), FOI 2026-032 (22 September 2026), FOI 2026-036 (5 October 2026) and your reply of 16 October 2026 on the search basis. Thank you for your replies about Great House Farm / Tŷ Mawr, Llandough-juxta-Penarth, Vale of Glamorgan. I would be grateful for help reconciling them with two published sources. Your replies, as I understand them: - FOI 2026-024: no records of the specific discovery (a soldier, horse, visor and lance); - FOI 2026-032: other archaeological discoveries at Great House Farm were identified but treated as unrelated or out of scope; - FOI 2026-036: no accession entry, register, day-book, donations book or correspondence dated 1875-1915 for ironwork, armour, a visor, lance or helmet from Great House / Llandough Farm, including the former Cardiff Museum registers; - 16 October 2026: no separate search log is held beyond what was supplied. The published sources: - Glamorgan-Gwent Archaeological Trust, "Land at Great House Farm, Llandough: An Archaeological Assessment", August 1990 (planning files 89/01396/OUT and 92/00671/RES): "it is likely that some medieval ironwork which is held by the National Museum of Wales was discovered under the rear wing c 1880 (RCAHMW 1988)." - Holbrook and Thomas, Medieval Archaeology 49 (2005), p. 70, n. 142: "medieval ironwork was discovered under the rear wing of Great House Farm c. 1880. It is now in the collections of the National Museums & Galleries of Wales." Either the published statements are mistaken, or the objects are recorded under a different findspot, donor name or description. I am asking only for recorded information, or confirmation that none is held: 1. Please provide any record held by Amgueddfa Cymru (including correspondence with the authors or with GGAT/RCAHMW, enquiry files, or collections-management notes) that records or comments on the statement that medieval ironwork from Great House Farm is in the Museum's collections. If none is held, please say so. 2. Please search the collections database and the accession registers for medieval ironwork (any object type) with any of these in the findspot, place, donor or provenance fields: "Llandough", "Llandough-juxta-Penarth", "Great House", "Ty Mawr", "Tŷ Mawr", "Cedfin", "Williams of Great House", or a Cardiff Museum donation before 1912. Please list any matches, with accession numbers and descriptions, or confirm that there are none. 3. Please say whether any record identified and treated as unrelated under FOI 2026-024 or 2026-032 could correspond to the c.1880 ironwork. 4. If this is better treated as a request for internal review of FOI 2026-036, please treat it as one and tell me the reference and the date by which you will reply. Please reply within 20 working days (by 16 November 2026).
