Subject: Records request — Lambeth Palace Library / Church Commissioners: glebe, exchange and Bute Estate records, Llandough-juxta-Penarth (ECE/6/3/372/CD27551) From: Sion Buckler Direction: sent Date: Tue, 20 Oct 2026 00:23 UTC Institution: Church of England archives (Lambeth Palace Library) Refs: none Archive id: gm-1a156b0b5929168e ------------------------------------------------------------ Dear Lambeth Palace Library / Church of England Record Centre, I am researching the history of Great House Farm (Tŷ Mawr), Llandough-juxta-Penarth, Vale of Glamorgan, the farm next to St Dochdwy's church, which was demolished in 1988. I am trying to establish, from the records, how the land around the church and the farm was held, exchanged and transferred, and by whom. Two catalogue entries appear to relate to church land at Llandough: (a) Lambeth Palace Library ECE/6/3/372/CD27551 (1 March 1890): "Leckwith St James R with Llandough R & Cogan R. re. T. R. Thompson"; (b) The National Archives MAF 11/55/5333: "Order of exchange of lands. Place: Llandough, Glamorgan. Parties: Major H H Lee and T R Thompson" (11 September 1879). The Bute Estate held the freehold of Great House Farm until a conveyance on sale to Western Ground Rents Ltd dated 25 December 1938 (recited in a 1965 contract). I would be grateful for your voluntary help with the following: 1. File ECE/6/3/372/CD27551: a short description of its contents (for example, whether it concerns glebe, an exchange of land, or a sale), its extent, whether it contains any plan, and a quotation for copies of any plan or conveyance in it. 2. Whether the Ecclesiastical Commissioners' records hold any file on the 1879 exchange between Major H. H. Lee and T. R. Thompson (MAF 11/55/5333), if it concerns Llandough-juxta-Penarth rather than Llandough near Cowbridge, or any other exchange, sale or purchase of glebe at Llandough-juxta-Penarth, with the file references. 3. Any glebe terrier, glebe plan or tithe-related file for Llandough-juxta-Penarth, Leckwith or Cogan held in the Ecclesiastical Commissioners' or Queen Anne's Bounty records, with references. 4. Any correspondence between the Ecclesiastical Commissioners and the Bute Estate (the Marquess of Bute or his agents) about land at Llandough or Leckwith, with references. 5. Any manorial records for Llandough or Leckwith held by the Library or the Record Centre. 6. Whether any record in the scope above is known to have been transferred to another repository (for example, the Representative Body of the Church in Wales after disestablishment in 1920, the National Library of Wales or Glamorgan Archives) or destroyed, with the date and the record of the transfer or destruction where held. I understand that Lambeth Palace Library and the Church Commissioners are not subject to the Freedom of Information Act 2000, so this is a request for your voluntary help, and I am happy to pay normal copying charges. Catalogue references and a short description of each item would be ideal, even without copies. If you hold nothing, a short note saying so would be equally helpful. A reply by 17 November 2026 would be much appreciated. Yours faithfully, Sion Buckler (Ret'd Sergeant) Royal Signals Cyber/Electronic Warfare Professional https://greathousefarmwiki.wordpress.com
