Subject: Research visit request — Bute Estate (Glamorgan) records, 1667 and 1875–1880 — Llandough-juxta-Penarth From: Sion Buckler Direction: sent Date: Thu, 15 Oct 2026 23:01 UTC Institution: Mount Stuart (Bute archive) Refs: none Archive id: gm-1a141ccee6dea9c9 ------------------------------------------------------------ Dear Collections Team, I would like to book a research visit to the Bute Archive at Mount Stuart. I understand that you are not taking general enquiries until January 2027, so this is a research visit request only. Please send me the Reader Registration Form and Reading Room Regulations, and your available dates (I can give at least three weeks' notice). PLEASE NOTE: DUPLICATE PLACE AND FARM NAMES IN GLAMORGAN Glamorgan has two parishes called Llandough, and each had a farm called Great House. IN SCOPE: Llandough-juxta-Penarth (Llandough near Penarth and Cardiff), hundred of Dinas Powys. Great House Farm / Tŷ Mawr stood beside St Dochdwy's church, approx. ST 168 733. OUT OF SCOPE: Llandough-juxta-Cowbridge (Llandough near Cowbridge), and the Great Houses at nearby Llandow and Aberthin. Please do not prepare records for the Cowbridge-area places. If an item says only "Llandough" or "Great House" and the parish cannot be told, please flag it rather than assume. To help you prepare, these are the records I hope to consult, all for Llandough-juxta-Penarth: 1. Bute Estate (Glamorgan) accounts, rentals, trustees' papers or correspondence for 1875–1880, especially anything recording a payment from Daniel Thomas (or Daniel Thomas & Son) or a disposal of land at Llandough in 1877. 2. Any Herbert, Windsor or Bute deeds, surveys, rentals or court records for the manor of Llandough for c.1660–1680, especially 1667, naming the holder of Great House. 3. Any lease of Great House to the Williams family, or any lease of it for 999 years. The family's account is that such a lease was granted in 1667; no copy has yet been found. 4. The conveyance by which the Bute estate acquired Great House from the Vaughan family or its heirs (late 18th century), and any abstract of title reciting leases then outstanding. 5. Any later index, schedule or abstract of title for Bute land at Llandough that would show when Great House left or stayed in the estate. If none of these are held at Mount Stuart, or they are at the National Library of Wales or Cardiff, a one-line confirmation would save a wasted journey.
