Ordnance Survey Historical Enquiries Team, I am writing to request information regarding historical Ordnance Survey mapping and naming conventions for a specific area in Llandough, near Penarth, Vale of Glamorgan (Wales). I am researching the historical depiction of a property and surrounding land historically referred to as Ty Mawr / Great House Farm, and I am trying to understand how its labelling and placement may have changed across Ordnance Survey map editions. Specific mapping references The area I am examining includes the following Ordnance Survey historical map references: 38-1-608 38-1-334 I am also comparing Ordnance Survey map editions from approximately the 1950s through to the early 1970s. Mapping issue being investigated From comparing available historical map editions, I have observed the following: Earlier Ordnance Survey maps (pre-1950s / early 1950s) appear to consistently show the name Ty Mawr / Great House Farm in one field or parcel location. In later editions (circa early 1970s), the label “Ty Mawr” appears to shift position between adjacent parcels, and the descriptor “Farm” appears to be applied or positioned differently than in earlier mapping. There also appears to be a change in how the surrounding land parcels are labelled or visually grouped. What I am seeking clarification on Could you please advise: Whether Ordnance Survey records show any map revision notes, resurvey information, or internal documentation explaining changes in naming or label placement for this area between approximately 1950 and 1975 Whether changes such as the movement of a name between adjacent parcels would typically result from: resurvey work or updated field recording cartographic generalisation or redraw practices changes in naming conventions or feature classification Whether OS holds any guidance or archival material explaining how estate names or farm names were assigned, repositioned, or reinterpreted across map editions in this period Which historical Ordnance Survey editions or map series would best show the most accurate progression of naming and label placement for this specific site If possible, I would also appreciate guidance on accessing any archived mapping sheets or revision history material relevant to this location. Thank you for your assistance. I appreciate your time in helping clarify how Ordnance Survey mapping practices evolved during this period.
